Amos & Andy Show, The - Old Time Radio
![]() Amos 'N' Andy was an influential situation comedy show that enjoyed a long run from 1929 to 1960. Many historians agreed that Amos 'N' Andy was perhaps the most popular radio show of all time. It was estimated that 40 million Americans tuned in religiously, at almost one-third of the population at the time. |

Freeman Gosden, a white actor, played Amos' Jones in black dialect while Charles Correll, also a white man, starred as Andy Brown. Gosden and Correll wrote the scripts, frequently just right before air time. Both men believed in spontaneity and expressed their dramatic skills freely and realistically in the studio. The show gripped the nation especially during the Great Depression era, as Americans could better relate to the hardship many urban poor African Americans endured. |
